Vietnam has emerged as a biggest exporter of large-sized shrimp to the U.S. in the first eight months of this year, web site of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers reported October 19.
Between January and August, Vietnam shipped 3,800 tons of large-sized shrimps valued at US$62.4 million to the U.S, an increase of 21.7 per cent from late 2006.
In the first eight months of 2007, the U.S. imported US$2.33 billion worth of shrimps, down by 0.4 per cent from last 2006.
Other big exporters of shrimps to the U.S. include China, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Equado.
Vietnam raked in $737.4 million from exporting 76,017 tons of all kinds of shrimps in the first seven months, down 3.5 per cent on year in volume but up 3.5 per cent in value.
The U.S. took the lead among importers with total import revenue amounting to $248.8 million though it bought only 19,225 tons. Japan bought 26,362 tons worth $225.6 million.
Other big importers were EU, Taiwan, Canada, South Korea, Australia and China who bought $75.9 million, $31.5 million, $29 million, $28.5 million, $27.9 million and $22.1 million, respectively. (www.vasep.com.vn)
