Mekong Delta An Giang province expects to reap US$335 million from pangasius exports in 2007, surpassing 10 per cent of the yearly plan and accounting for 62 per cent of the province’s GDP.
The revenue makes An Giang the biggest pangasius exporter in Vietnam whose total revenue from the products is predicted to hit US$1 billion by the end of this year.
Export price of the products is averaging at US$2,691 a ton in 2007, up by US$52 a ton on year.
An Giang’s pangasius products are now shipped to 75 countries and territories worldwide, up from 45 countries in 2006.
The province is now home to 19 pangasius processing factories, up from ten factories in 2006.
Up to 16,000 households in the province are specializing in breeding catfish on nearly 13,300 hectares, up by 4,500 households and 500 hectares from 2006. (Vietnam Economic Times)
