Forty foreign import-export firms had been set up in Vietnam’s southern economic hub of Ho Chi Minh City in the first seven months of this year, said the municipal Planning and Investment Service.

The establishments quadrupled the whole figure of 2007, noted the service.

Currently, most of the firms are only allowed to import goods into Vietnam, then sell to traders or other organizations. They have not yet been permitted to directly sell goods to customers.

In late May 2007, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) announced the roadmap allowing foreign invested enterprises (FIEs) greater involvement in goods distribution in Vietnam, in line with WTO commitments.

Under the roadmap, FIEs in Vietnam will have full rights to establish firms for local goods distribution from January 1, 2009. (Youth)
