Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has recently approved the state-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) to build a hydropower plant costing US$386 million in central Thanh Hoa province, the New Hanoi newspaper reported.

Of the total investment, the World Bank (WB) is expected to provide loans worth US$330 million through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD); and EVN will contribute the rest of US$56 million for the Trung Son hydropower project.

The hoped plant is expected for operation in 2014, EVN said.

Information about the project’s capacity, however, is not made available.

Vietnam may lack 8.6 billion kWh of power this year and the country’s power shortfall will peak at 10.3 billion kWh in 2009.

The country plans to raise the total capacity of hydropower generation projects to more than 18,000 MW and the annual output of over 80 billion kWh by 2015. (New Hanoi, Thanh Nien Daily)
