Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung Sept 13 held a talk with local economists to evaluate the country’s socioeconomic real situation and prospect in the remaining months of this year and 2009.
Opening the meeting, Dung mentioned the fact that the global economy has experienced turmoil with price hike and inflation since the beginning of this year, forcing many countries to revise their economic growth targets, including Vietnam.
With the government’s austere measures, Vietnam’s economy recorded initial positive changes in the past eight months. The industrial and agricultural production continued their track of development with livestock and plant diseases being contained, exports soaring, imports being tightly controlled, and the consumer price index slowing down.
However, the national economy has unveiled a lot of weaknesses, he said.
The economists, therefore, should contribute specific opinions to the government in coming time to help manage monetary activities, interest rates, exchange rates, investment, import-export, trade deficit and social welfare.
The Government will base on those opinions to make forecasts for the country’s socio-economic performance this year and outline goals, plans and tasks of the national economy in 2009.
The economists, meanwhile, debated the prioritized goals, and solutions to curb inflation and continue reducing poverty and maintain an appropriate growth rate for 2009.
They also shared experiences and map out orientations to settle problems arising from development course relating to agriculture, rural development, job generation and social welfare. (Labor, VNA)
