The U.S. companies showed their interest in Vietnamese pepper and belief in bigger import values from the product at a workshop in New York City Sept 16, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The workshop on Vietnamese pepper for the U.S. market, held by the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), offered business opportunities to 25 VPA’s members and many U.S. companies.

Since 2003, Vietnam has been the world’s largest pepper producer, supplying for more than 80 markets worldwide, Tran Ngoc Chau, VPA’s vice chairman said at the workshop.

Over the last 5 years, Vietnam shipped around 10,000–20,000 tons of pepper to the U.S. yearly, peaking at 20,000 tons in 2005.

The U.S. imports more than 60,000 tons of pepper each year, accounting for 26 per cent of the world’s pepper market shares. (Vietnam & World Economy)
