Vietnam Financial Ministry has decided to triple import tax on poultry meat in response to suggestion of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Vietnam Animal Husbandry Association.

According to the Decision No 83/2008/QD-BTC issued by the Deputy Minister of Finance, Tran Xuan Ha, import tax on Japanese frozen and fresh chicken, swan, and groose will be risen from 15 per cent to 40 per cent.

Import tax on poultry’s leg, wing, and liver will be up 5 per cent to 20 per cent.

The ministry also decided to hike tax on imported animal feed from 5 per cent to 8 per cent.

Meanwhile, import tax on fresh and frozen buffalo and beef will rise by 2 per cent to 17 per cent, while tax on imported pig will be 27 per cent instead of current 25 per cent.

Sharp rise of imported meat against last year is the biggest reason for the hike of import tax.

In the first eight months of 2008, Vietnam imported 8,612 tons of pig meats and 103,401 tons of poultry meat, up 20 times and three times against last year, respectively.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) said the new duties do not contradict Vietnam’s commitments to the World Trade Organization as the country has reduced the tariffs applied to these products ahead of schedule. (Vietnam Agriculture, The People)
