The Ministry of Industry and Trade forecast that Vietnam’s pepper output will be only 84,000 tons in 2008, down by 14 per cent against a year earlier, according to the Vietnam & World Economy newspaper.
The ministry said as of late September 2008, the county had only 12,000 tons of pepper for export.
Despite slim supply, pepper export prices continued falling due to the global financial crisis, the ministry said, adding that Vietnamese pepper was traded only US$2,875-US$2,900 a ton Oct 14, down by US$50 a ton from previous days.
Pepper prices at domestic market also shrank to only VND40,000 a kilogram of black variety, the lowest level so far this year, while white pepper prices dropped to VND72,000 a kilogram from VND82,000 in March. (Vietnam & World Economy)
