In 2007, central Binh Dinh Province reported industrial production values of over VND4.8 trillion, up 30.2 per cent. This has been the highest increase in the province. The province also reported increased export turnovers of US$325.5 million in 2007, up 33.5 per cent compared to that of 2006.
New milestones in the provincial industrial development
In recent ten years, the province always gained high industrial production values with the average growth rate of 26.5 per cent in the 1996 – 2000, and 14.5 per cent in the 2001 – 2005 period. Notably, the province for the first time reported industrial production values of over VND1 trillion in 1999. The VND1 trillion industrial production values was very significant at the time. However, the record was broken in 2005 when the province reported the industrial production values of VND3.3 trillion and over VND4.8 trillion in 2007, up 30.2 per cent against 2006.
The number of industrial production units and home craft producers has increased strongly: around 6,500 units more than 2000. To date, the number reaches 19,300, generating jobs for around 100,900 local people.
Quality of the local industrial production has also improved and gradually gained firm foothold in the local market thanks to application of international-standard quality management. Key local products including seafood, processed woodwork, sugar, beer, milk, footwear, garment and textile and construction materials have built brands in the local market as well as foreign ones.
Comprehensive trade development
Regarding trade sector, Binh Dinh has obtained big achievements in the trade sector: gaining foothold in the local market, wider operation expansions of trade units. The province now is home to 1,200 enterprises operating in trade and service sector and more than 40,000 individual business households. Total retail turnover and social service revenues have increased with the average increase of 12.3 per cent in the 2001 – 2005 period and 20 per cent in 2007.
Regarding trade sector, Binh Dinh has obtained big achievements in the trade sector: gaining foothold in the local market, wider operation expansions of trade units. The province now is home to 1,200 enterprises operating in trade and service sector and more than 40,000 individual business households. Total retail turnover and social service revenues have increased with the average increase of 12.3 per cent in the 2001 – 2005 period and 20 per cent in 2007.
Trade centres, and market network have been built rapidly in the province. Binh Dinh now reports 167 markets, and 149 petroleum retail agents. Modern distribution networks, trade operation chains, trade complexes, supermarkets, free-choice stores...have strongly developed, creating a favourable distribution channel between local areas and the Central Highlands region as well.
In 2007, export turnovers of the province hit US$325.5 million, up 33.5 per cent compared to 2006. Its export structure has also been changed from higher raw products to higher processed and high-tech products. The province has also expanded its export markets from 42 countries and territories in 2001 to 76 to date.
Towards sustainable development
Binh Dinh aims to gain VND10.23 trillion from industrial production values in 2010 with average growth rate of 25.3 per cent in the 2006 – 2010 period. It also aims to obtain total export turnovers of US$450 million in 2010 with average growth rate of 16 per cent in the 2006-2010 and total retail and social service turnovers of VND 16 trillion with the average growth rate of 15.1 per cent in the 2006-2010…Nguyen Kim Phuong, Director of Binh Dinh Department of Industry and Trade, said: the local industry and trade sector has mapped out measures and strategies to gain the targets as well as raise its competitive capacity and expand strategic export activities.

For export activities, Mr Phuong said Binh Dinh always creates favourable conditions for local businesses to expand their operations, apply new technology, diversify product models, and make new products; ensure enough materials for production by pouring more investment in construction of material wholesale markets, reduce cost of material imports; establish associations for sectors aiming to foster cooperation between businesses and raise competitive capacity for local businesses.
