More than 3.2 million Vietnamese are currently living and working in some 100 countries and territories in the world. The majority of Vietnamese expatriates always turn to their country of origin. No matter where, all the sons and daughters of the Vietnamese nation long to be back to their motherland and reunite with family, friends to engulf themselves in and share all the successes of the country’s cause of “Doi Moi” (reform and renovation). In seeing the Vietnamese community abroad as an inseparable section of the Vietnamese nation, the CPV Politburo on overseas Vietnamese affairs made it clear that it would be necessary “to create the favourable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to come back, visit their homeland and expand their business activities in their homeland as well as their living countries.
During high-ranking visits to foreign countries, Vietnamese leaders have always paid attention to Vietnamese communities and spent time talking with them. In recent visits to the US, Japan, Australia, China, Russia, EU member nations and the Eastern Europe …, Vietnamese leaders have held warm talks with Vietnamese overseas. In June, 2007, after arriving in Washington, State President Nguyen Minh Triet accompanied by a Vietnamese mission met with officials of Vietnam Embassy in the US, Vietnamese students studying in the US and Vietnamese community in Washington and neighbouring states. Also, during the visit to the US in June, 2008, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung spent time talking with Vietnamese businesses and intellects in Houston, the biggest city of Texas State. During the visit to Australia in October, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung met with officials of Vietnam Embassy in Australia, representatives of Vietnamese community in Australia and Vietnamese students studying in Australia. PM Dung highlighted great contributions of the Vietnamese Community in Australia to closer cooperation between Vietnam and Australia. The PM noted the two nations agreed that the Vietnamese community of nearly 250,000 have made great contributions to the development of Vietnam and Australia relations. PM Dung said Vietnamese community abroad is an inseparable section of the Vietnamese nation and expressed his hope that the community would join hands with Vietnamese People in the national development. The Vietnamese community in Australia also expressed their wish to contribute more to the development of the homeland country.
In fact, more and more Vietnamese Overseas are coming back, visiting their homeland and relatives and actively joining in activities to contribute to the national social-economic development. Lots of overseas Vietnamese businesses have gained successes in the homeland. Others have made successes in investment and trade promotion activities between Vietnam and other countries. With experience and knowledge of living countries, overseas Vietnamese would better help Vietnamese enterprises enter the market and boost export activities. They are also bridge liking leading groups with Vietnam.
Nguyen Thanh Son, Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Acting Chairman of the Committee on Overseas Vietnamese, said: “To organise more activities for Vietnamese overseas, the Government of Vietnam signed Decree No.19/2008/CT-TTg on implementation of the Government’s action programme for Overseas Vietnamese. This has showed special attention from the Government and Party to Vietnamese community abroad. Beside traditional meetings such as Lunar New Year Meeting, overseas Vietnamese often return homeland to attend Hung King’s Festival… To build close relations between overseas Vietnamese and the homeland, the of the Committee on Overseas Vietnamese successfully organised Vietnam Summer Camp 2008 and Moscow Meeting 2008 in August this year. During the Vietnam Summer Camp 2008, overseasVietnamese took tours to three regions of Vietnam to visit cultural and historical relics such as the Hung Kings’ temple, Ha Long Bay, Hue Citadel, Hoi An Ancient Town, Cu Chi Tunnel.... The Moscow Meeting 2008 was held from August 9 – 13, 2008 in Moscow City- Russia. The meeting was a chance for the participants to share experience and boost cooperation between. The activities have tightened ties between Vietnamese overseas with their homeland.
