The opening of a series of important tourism events in 2013 is the announcement ceremony of the Red River Delta National Tourism Year – Hai Phong, held on January 6 in Hai Phong City, also known as the city of red flamboyant flowers. Eleven Red River Delta provinces and cities with huge and diverse tourism potential bring unique and exciting experiences to travellers.

On this occasion, the Vietnam Business Forum has an interview with Mr Duong Anh Dien, Chairman of Hai Phong People's Committee and Head of the Organisation Board for Red River Delta National Tourism Year - Hai Phong 2013, on typical activities and tourism products in the national tourism year, themed “Red River Civilisation”.

Could you tell us the message Hai Phong wants to deliver through these major events in 2013?
The announcement ceremony of the National Tourism Year 2013 is organised by Hai Phong City as the host right from the start of year. The formal procedure is very concise and common enough to introduce tourism potentials and strengths of 11 Red River Delta provinces and cities through Red River civilisation values. The opening ceremonial will be held on May 11 because flamboyant flowers – the symbol of the event – blossom this month. Besides, many important events of the country will take place before and after this point of time.

How will year-round events highlight the theme of the National Tourism Year - "Red River Civilisation"?
In our point of view, the Red River civilisation does not exist in a historical period but it is a current of thousands of years. The Red River Delta is the cradle of the Vietnamese peoples and its civilisation is tied to wet rice cultivation inextricably linked with rivers and the sea and is expressed in both tangible and intangible values. We will pick and choose values that help promote tourism development and attract domestic and international travellers to explore. This will in turn help develop regional tourism and contribute to national tourism development.

Some coastal provinces and cities in the Red River Delta have unique values recognised by the world. How will the region promote these maritime values in the coming time?
We attach special important to maritime values - part of the Red River civilisation. Islands and seawaters in the Red River Delta region are the most beautiful in the country, especially in Hai Phong City and Quang Ngai province. We have Ha Long - Cat Ba Archipelago and we will organise many events in this area such as beach sports, yachting and other activities. Apart from very typical wet rice cultivation and culture, maritime values are also characteristic of this region. This is important and typical contents of tourism promotion in this region.

How will the Organisation Board promote these events?
We have hosted meetings with related localities, central agencies and press agencies. We will popularise the events not only locally but also internationally. Widespread information is very important because it will attract the public to join - the host of tourism activities in the Red River Delta and Hai Phong City. As soon as the public is aware of tourism business, we will then have true, sustainable tourism.

Thank you very much!
