In recent years, Japanese direct investment has played an important role in the socio-economic development of Hai Phong City. Vietnam Business Forum interviewed Mr Kimitoshi Sato, CEO of Toyoda Gosei Hai Phong Co., Ltd, regarding Hai Phong’s investment environment and the company’s business performance. Duy Binh reports.

Can you tell us some results that you achieved in the past year?
Toyoda Gosei Hai Phong Company is an affiliate to Toyoda Gosei Group - a large corporation with worldwide brand specializing in manufacturing automobile parts and components, the main supplier for Toyota. Toyoda Gosei Hai Phong, located in Nomura Industrial Zone - Hai Phong, is currently producing various kinds of airbags used for automobiles. Officially licensed from September 2004, we have gradually grown, particularly, in 2005, we completed the construction of factories No. 1 and No. 2 and in 2008 continued to build the third one, as of 2014, the total number of employees is 3,200. In recent years, Toyoda Gosei Hai Phong has made important contributions to promoting socio-economic development of Hai Phong, creating more jobs and increasing income for workers, ensuring safety, maintaining order and security; workers' productivity and wages are always higher than previous years.

Environmental factors are always of particular concern to Japanese businesses. How much attention has Toyoda Gosei paid to this issue?Every year, our company has held the festival “Afforestation" at the company's factories. So far we have planted 23,000 trees. Planting green trees contributes to creating a green-clean-beautiful environment, giving people a sense of comfort and inspiring people to work better. This activity is of significance to local people, especially children who are future owners of our country. The forest will accompany Hai Phong and the company many decades later, this means that Toyoda Gosei Hai Phong Company will have a strong attachment to long-term development of Hai Phong City.

What do you think about Hai Phong’s investment environment? What are your advantages and disadvantages?
So far, Vietnam and Japan have maintained a good long-lasting diplomatic relationship, especially after the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations establishment between the two countries in 2013. As a Japanese who works in Vietnam, I will not stop putting efforts to maintain the good relations between the two sides, and meeting expectations of city leaders in Hai Phong.

Hai Phong is a port city with a favourable economic position. Furthermore, the city authority also takes interest in port infrastructure development. With the timely direction of the city government, I myself think that there will be more Japanese enterprises investing in Hai Phong in the future.

Recently, human resource in Hai Phong City has basically met the needs of businesses. However, when large electronics companies go into operation, they will attract a large number of workers, resulting in a shift in the labour force in industrial zones, causing the instability. Before 2011, the company had difficulties in labour recruiting, besides, the level of labour in Hai Phong was still not high, the working style was also poor. Hai Phong should pay more attention to these issues in the coming time.
