Hanoi has become one of the two economic engines of the country. After it expanded its administrative boundaries, the capital city of Vietnam continued to achieve more outstanding, comprehensive results. The role, position and prestige of the capital and of the nation in the heart of international community and friends all over the globe are constantly improved. In urban construction and management, Hanoi has made remarkable progress by restoring and upgrading infrastructure and building many works to beautify its landscape.
New construction works are beautifying its outlook. Urban infrastructure systems, particularly key transport projects, are of special focus. Gateways into the city are expanded and many new picturesque roads are being built to connect its urban zones.
Hanoi has completed many key traffic projects like Ring Road 1, Ring Road 2, Ring Road 3 and afferent traffic route systems like Thang Long Avenue, Tran Duy Hung Street, Nguyen Chi Thanh Street, National Road 32, Lang Ha Street, Le Van Luong Street, Dao Tan - Nguyen Khanh Toan Section, Cat Linh - La Thanh Section. These traffic routes have facilitated travelling in business districts.
Previously, Hanoi had only a few bridges across the Red River but it now has many long bridges like Vinh Tuy, Thanh Tri and upcoming Nhat Tan. These crossings ensure smooth connection and travelling between Hanoi and other economic regions. The Ring Road 2 construction project (Nhat Tan-Cau Giay section) is being expeditiously built and completed to effectively link to Nhat Tan Bridge, which is expected to be put into use in 2015. Hanoi and the Ministry of Transport are also rushing to complete infrastructure projects like a road that links Nhat Tan Bridge to Noi Bai International Airport, the February International Terminal (Noi Bai International Airport), Hanoi-Haiphong Expressway, Belt Road 2 (Vinh Tuy Bridge-Nga Tu Vong Junction), Nga Tu Vong Junction - Nga Tu So Section, Cau Giay - Buoi - Nhat Tan Section. Hanoi expects to complete the restoration and construction of transport infrastructure systems in 2015.
Expanded transport networks and infrastructure systems have enlivened satellite towns. Tourism potential was waken up in Son Tay District, from Duong Lam ancient village to Ba Vi National Park. This has become a favourite destination for tourists. Hoa Lac Town with Hoa Lac High-tech Park has attracted 70 investment projects capitalised more than VND56,000 billion.
Vu Van Vien, Director of the Hanoi Department of Transport, said Hanoi and its transport sector must continue to work out transport development plans to 2030, with a vision to 2050, to lay the groundwork for other construction projects and give a base for districts to adjust their construction planning.
In addition, the city will complete building roads and bridges across the Red and Duong rivers to perfect ring road networks, upgrade afferent traffic routes (National Road 1A, National Road 3, National Road 6, West Thang Long Axis, North - South Axis, etc.), and operate parking lots.
In addition, the transport sector also needs to focus on rural traffic development and integrate new countryside construction with industrialisation and modernisation process. The development of rural transport networks and bus networks to districts and communes will help regulate population density for urban areas to reduce pressure on urban transport and minimise traffic jams.
As infrastructure development investment requires huge capital, Hanoi will adopt new investment attraction forms like BOT, BTO, BT and PPP instead of only State budgets. In the near term, the city will build frame infrastructure systems to meet immediate socioeconomic development requirements.
