“Making long distances into short journeys” is the slogan for the Hanoi Transport Corporation (Hanoi Transerco) to open three new bus routes linking Hanoi to its neighbouring provinces. The opening of the new routes is one of the activities of Hanoi Transerco to celebrate the National Day (September 2) and to carry out the Prime Minister’s decision on orientations to develop the social economy of the northern focal economic zone from now to 2010 and its vision to 2020. The three routes, including Route 204 (Hanoi - Thuan Thanh District in Bac Ninh Province), Route 205 (Hanoi - Hung Yen Province) and Route 206 (Hanoi - Ha Nam Province), are part of Hanoi Transerco’s plan to open bus routes to neighbouring localities, 60km away from Hanoi.

According to Mr Nguyen Doan Dung, general director of Hanoi Transerco, passengers from Ha Nam to Hanoi’s Giap Bat Bus Station and Thuan Thanh to Hanoi’s Luong Yen Bus Station can travel to any place in Hanoi because these bus routes are linked with 43 inner city bus routes of Hanoi Transerco and four luxury routes of Tan Dat Centre. With eighteen 80-seat buses, Route 206 runs 106 trips a day from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. With fourteen 80-seat buses, Route 204 runs 122 trips a day from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Also according to Mr. Dung, the fare for each partial trip is VND5,000 (32 US cents) while the fare for the whole trip is VND10,000 (64 US cents). The price of the prepaid monthly ticket is VND150,000 for members of the public and VND100,000 for students.

These routes are expected to develop economic and cultural exchanges between Hanoi a neighbouring provinces, increase economic efficiency, address traffic accidents and reduce the flow of private vehicles into Hanoi from other provinces.
