On November 12-14, 2005, in Hanoi, Japan-Vietnam Geo-Information Association and National Committee on Thang Long - Hanoi 1000th anniversary will organise an international seminar on geo-information in Asian history research “ Regional cooperation and data sharing to promote metropolitan history research”. IT application in the restoration of Thang Long - Hanoi relics will be included. The following is the view of Dr Nghiem Vu Khai, member of Science, Technology and Environment Commission, National Assembly, and Co-Chair, Japan-Vietnam Geo-Information Association.

In preparation for the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi, we have many things to do within a short span of five years. The work is even more difficult to create a true picture of Thang Long through different periods of history. The Japanese government has financed a cooperation programme for Vietnamese and Japanese scientists to restore historic and cultural relics of Thang Long - Hanoi. At the international seminar, Japanese scientists will share experiences on 3D information technology on topography of cultural relics with Vietnamese counterparts. The role of the government is essential for the development of such technology.

How can the technology be applied in the commemoration of Thang Long – Hanoi?

The application of 3D technology will recreate historic and cultural relics. It will influence the awareness of the people and authorities. It requires the joint efforts of concerned authorities such as Ministry of Culture, Hanoi People’s Committee, Vietnam Administration of Tourism, universities, and institutes. I have witnessed with great admiration the success of 3D technology on several ancient architecture sites around the world. I hope that the success will be repeated in Thang Long - Hanoi and the people and scientists will contribute to the reappearance of ancient architecture. At the seminar, Vietnamese scientists will also introduce their success of the recent past.

What are the duties of the Association and its aims for the future?

In past years, we established an association of volunteers between the two countries to promote information technology in the research and sustainable exploitation of natural resources, including the restoration of historic and cultural relics by IT topography. It is most encouraging to note that Vietnamese and Japanese scientists have developed very good cooperation especially in preparation of the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi. I hope that the initial achievements will be developed further in the next five years with the joint efforts of Vietnamese and Japanese governments to ensure the success not only in the Thang Long - Hanoi project but also in other fields.
