Vietnam Business Forum’s reporter Nhat Minh held an interview with Mr. Ho Huu Thoi,
Director, Nghe An province’s Department of Culture and Information, about Nghe An Tourism Year 2005.
Are you pleased to introduce the highlights of Nghe An Tourism 2005?
With the approval of the Prime Minister, Nghe An province in conjunction with related ministries and agencies have organised Nghe An Tourism 2005. The opening event was the announcement of the Tourism Year on the 975th anniversary of the province at the Vinh stadium with the presence of tens of thousands of local people and representatives from the Central Government and other provinces. The ceremony was followed by a cultural performance “Land and people of Nghe An” relayed live on Vietnam Television to people throughout the country.
The second event was the commemoration of the 115th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh combined with the Culture-Tourism and Sen village festival Week. In fact, the event continued for the whole length of May beginning with Cua Lo festival - sea-tourism on April 30 - May 1, 2005. From May 15 to 21 was the Culture-Tourism and Sen village festival week. The event ended with folk songs and traditional opera from May 23 to 30, 2005. Those activities attracted over one million people to Nghe An.
By the end of December, Nghe An will conclude its Tourism Year and prepare for the continued development of tourism in the province.
What are the experiences and lessons from the first tourism year in Nghe An?
Nghe An is the third province to organize a Tourism Year. It is an opportunity to introduce the tourism opportunities of the province. Learning from the previous experiences of Quang Ninh and Dien Bien provinces and from its own creativity, Nghe An has prepared a quality programme and together with Minister of Culture, Vietnam Administration of Tourism and others successfully organised the Tourism Year with hundreds of products including books, pamphlets, posters, and compact disks.
The Tourism Year has given rise to the development of tourism and has encouraged investment which will improve facilities and services in the province.
The most important lesson learned is that with internal resources fully mobilised together with the participation of all related agencies and branches, the success of such an event can be secured even when it is the first time. In addition, attractive tourist products, continued improvement of facilities and services must be provided.
In the process of globalisation, what is the strategy of the province to attract more local and foreign tourists?
Culture and tourism go hand in hand. Most tourist products are cultural (tangible and non-tangible). Relics and landscapes are tourist products. Nghe An has thousands of such relics and landscapes including nearly 150 of national standard. Folk music, songs and dances are important resources for the development of tourist products. We must include and develop them in our tourism strategy.
For that purpose, relics must be restored together with sightseeing tours. In particular, vi dam culture could be submitted for UNESCO recognition as a world heritage. Meanwhile Cua Lo beach, Pu Mat national park, Nghe An land of learning can be further developed. Culture, information, tourism services and mass media must make joint efforts to promote investments and attract more tourists to Nghe An.
