According to the development plan of infrastructure in Northern provinces to 2010 and vision of 2020, Phu Tho is an important axle bridging the Red River Delta with the North-West. In particular, it will be the biggest transit from China to seaports of Cai Lan and Haiphong through Viet Tri river port.

The transit volume in 2010 is expected at 5 million tonnes and valued at over US$10 million. Due to such potentials, Duyen Hai Transport Co., Ltd (TASACO) – Haiphong has decided to invest and operate ICD (Inland Container Depot) in Thuy Van industrial zone – Viet Tri city, Phu Tho by the end of May 2007. ICD Phu Tho is useful for businesses and managers as the following:

Low transport cost:

According to TASACO, when ICD Phu Tho started operating, businesses will need only 3-5 hours (instead of 3-4 days in the past) to complete all formalities for transport after ICD Phu Tho received them. As a result, the cost for container inspection will reduced
Help develop Cai Lan port:

ICD Phu Tho will increase the number of ships calling at Cai Lan seaport as the ships can cruise directly to ICD Viet Tri without via Haiphong. The multi-form transport will cut off Feeder transport cost (transit commodities from Hong Kong and Singapore), etc.

ICD Phu Tho will promote the Trans-Asia transport from Cai Lan to Phu Tho. The big Cai Lan port will collect commodities and transport to ICD Phu Tho.

Alleviating the load of Haiphong port:

At present, Haiphong port is over-loaded with commodities (12.7 million tonnes in 2004). The cargo concentration in Haiphong has increased the transport cost for exporters and businesses as well as the difficulty of storage. Therefore, sharing the transport load from Haiphong, especially by inland port in Phu Tho is most necessary to save time and expenses for businesses.

Encouraging import-export activities in the region:

ICD Phu Tho will be a depot for import-export commodities, the transit for various transport means. The establishment of Customs Office at Thuy Van has also facilitated importers and exporters in Thuy Van industrial zone and businesses inside and outside Phu Tho province.

ICD Phu Tho with complete facilities will serve as the foundation for activities of shipping lines and agents as well as botanical inspection and others.

Facilitating the development of transit railway station:

ICD is a transit depot of temporarily imported commodities for Northern provinces as Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Vinh Phuc and transit transport of the region. ICD will facilitates TASACO to develop, in conjunction with Vietnam Railways Corporation, a complete transit railway station with modern equipment worth some US$2 million meeting the demand of customers in Phu Tho and neighbouring provinces.
