The Can Tho City Department of Tourism has full prepared for the National Mekong Can Tho Tourism Year 2008. The programme will be carried out in all 13 provinces in Mekong Delta region from February 21 to the year’s end.
Themed “Mekong Delta’s Waterways and Countryside”, the programme will include more than 59 events, including the road show to welcome the tourism year, the International Mekong Expo, the flower eve show to celebrate the Victory Day April 30, the boat race in the Mekong Delta, the Mekong Delta fruit festival, the southern Khmer cultural and sport festival, the waterway culture seminar. In 2008, Can Tho also inaugurates the Can Tho International Airport and celebrates its 5th founding anniversary.
Apart from main tourism and festivals organised in Can Tho City, each province in the Mekong Delta region will have one or two typically local events to show their uniqueness. At the same time, regional provinces will join hand together to organise long tours for tourists to visit gardens, traditional handicraft villages and historical relics in the Mekong Delta region to heat up the burning atmosphere of the national tourism year.
Mr Dinh Viet Khanh, director of Can Tho Department of Tourism, said the preparations for the tourism year have finished. Stay units in the city have been built and upgraded. In the first half of 2007, Can Tho had five new hotels, bringing the total number of hotels in the city to 120 with 3,000 rooms, including 24 hotels ranked 1-4 stars with 1,031 rooms.
The national tourism year 2008 also attracted the participation of foreign tourism companies from Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and China, which share the Mekong River. This is also a good chance for tourism companies to exchange business opportunities and attract foreign tourism investors into the Mekong Delta.
