Nha Trang and Soai Rap shipbuilders under the Vinashin Business Group have recently signed a US$142-million contract to build four cargo ships for Norway’s Calypso Group, the Vietnam Economic Times said.
The two builders each will build two 24,500-DWT ships and deliver them to the Norwegian firm of Calypso in 2010.
Thoi Bao Kinh Te also said that Nha Trang Shipbuilding Company has also inked a contract to build two ships valued at US$62 million for the Lao government.
A ship of 20,000 DWT and the other of 22,500 DWT will be handed over to the neighboring country by late 2009.
Vinashin has gained total revenues of VND8.7 trillion (US$543.7 million) in the first six months of this year, up 82.7 per cent on-year, said CEO Pham Thanh Binh.
The firm will expand its operations to real estate, metallurgy, and enhance heavy ship building and repairing, Binh said, noting that it will invest US$4 billion to expand its business from now to 2010. (Vietnam Economic Times)
