State-owned oil monopoly PetroVietnam group focus investment on electricity production to make the group’s power output represent 30 per cent of the national electricity capacity in the coming time, the Dau Tu (Investment) newspaper quoted a PetroVietnam high-level official as saying.

In addition to the US$1.7 billion project to build 1,410 MW Luong Prabang hydropower plant in Laos, PetroVietnam is seeking approval to become investor of coal-fired or gas-fueled power projects with capacity up to thousands of megawatts in northern Thai Binh province, Vung Ang area of central Ha Tinh province and Kien Luong area of southern Kien Giang province.

PetroVietnam plans to study and invest in some of 13 power projects state-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) has recently refused to invest in due to capital shortfall, the official said.

In the first eight months of this year, PetroVietnam’s power output was estimated at over 2 billion kWh.

The group will make efforts to put in use Ca Mau 2 and Nhon Trach 2 power plants at the end of this year in a bid to attain electricity output of over 4.7 billion kWh this year. (Investment, Icon)
