Export prices of Vietnamese rice are expected to rise slightly from now to the year’s end thanks to new demands from the Philippines and African countries, the Ministry of Industry and Trade forecasts.
Currently, the price is increasing in Mekong Delta provinces as local companies boosted purchase of 200,000 tons for export to African partners.
Prices of autumn-winter paddy rose to VND3,800-VND3,900 per kilogram (23-23.6 US cents), from VND3,700 a kilogram a week earlier.
Meanwhile, Filipino rice businesses are expected to seek rice import deals from Vietnam from October, with delivery during next January.
Vietnamese rice was offered at only US$540-US$550 a ton of 5 per cent broken rice, FOB, while Thais rice was US$700.
Vietnam planned to export between 4.5 million and 4.6 million tons of rice in 2008, surpassing India to become the second biggest rice exporter in the world.
In the first nine months of this year, the country shipped 3.692 million tons abroad, earning US$2.435 billion, down 7.4 per cent on year in volume but up 89.7 per cent in value.
As of mid-Sept, the country has harvested 11.3 million tons of summer-autumn paddy from 1.8 million hectares, or 4.78 tons per hectare on average, up by 1.13 million tons in output, and 0.18 tons in productivity.
The country expected to reap 38.6 million tons of paddy in 2008, up by 2.6 million tons from last year. (Vinanet, GSO)
