Japanese Group Seeks to Build US$4-Bln Steel Complex in Central Vietnam

Japan’s steel group JFE has submitted a project to build a steel complex with total investment of US$4 billion in central Quang Ngai province, the Tuoi Tre newspaper reported, citing Pham Chi Cuong, chairman of the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA).
 
The complex, set to be located in the Dung Quat Economic Zone, will have an annual capacity of 5 million tons.
 
Further detailed information about the project is not made available.
 
The project has raised the number of steel complexes to two in Dung Quat and to six nationwide, of which, three have been licensed including Formasa (Taiwan), Tycoon-E United (Taiwan) and Lion Group-Vinashin (a Malaysia-Vietnam joint venture), and three others are awaiting for approval, namely, Tata-VNSteel (a Vietnam-India joint venture, South Korea’s Posco and Japan’s JFE.   
 
According to Cuong, JFE is the world’s third largest steel groups, just behind Acelor-Mittan and Nippon Steel. (Tuoi Tre Online)
