Vietnam Business Forum’s reporter Lan Anh conducts an interview with Mr. Philip Crouch, General Manager of Retail Banking, ANZ Vietnam.

After nearly 16 years of operation in Vietnam, ANZ has set up plans to expand business activities in terms of services and the network of branches in Vietnam. Could you show more details about the expansion?
Earlier this year ANZ was the first bank to offer an online savings account, rewarding customers with high interest rates on their at call money. In July, we introduced Mobile Bankers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These experienced Bankers offer a convenient alternative to visiting the branch and can assist with all types of product inquiries.

Most recently, we welcomed the opening of ANZ foreign exchange counters at Noi Bai International Airport. After one month of operations, these foreign exchange counters have proved to be a convenient service channel for visitors to Hanoi.

Looking forward, we have made good progress with our plans to establish a locally incorporated 100 per cent foreign owned bank. In July this year, we have obtained in-principle approval from the State Bank of Vietnam. We expect to be able to commence opening new retail outlets later this year in the most convenient locations where our customers work and live in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Our strategy is to continue to offer a premium level of customer service and highly convenient banking services to our clients in Vietnam. This will mean opening many more outlets and ATMs in 2009 and beyond.

ANZ has just launched ANZ Mobile Banking service in Vietnam. What is the service’s benefits for ANZ customers?
Our Mobile Bankers are experienced Managers who are available to visit customers at their desired location (e.g. home, office) at a time that is most convenient for the customer. This helps busy professionals arrange their banking needs in a very convenient way and provides another alternative to the traditional branch service.

To see a Mobile Bank Manager, customers just call our 24/7 toll free number of 1800 1559, and request an appointment. During the visit, the customers will explain their banking needs and our professional staff will offer the appropriate financial solutions. Our recent reports showed that 95 per cent of the customers who received our consultation services from our Mobile Bankers registered to use ANZ services.

Mid May, ANZ Vietnam received the “Best Retail Bank in Vietnam” Award from The Asian Banker magazine. What are the key advantages of ANZ which have been well recognized by The Asian Banker?
The award reflected our superior product offering where we have continued to innovate and introduce new products. In addition our consistently high levels of customer service has become a point of differentiation. These qualities have in turn delivered strong growth in customers and financial performance.

Despite the explosive growth achieved, ANZ has also implemented sound risk management policies which have been well recognized by our regulator, the State Bank of Vietnam and the Asian Banker.

Could you brief some ANZ activities in charity and community development in Vietnam in recent years?
While maintaining the winning edge in the business field, ANZ Vietnam is an active participant in charity and community work.

On the community side, ANZ Vietnam has been working on various events that support sustainable development and business education. We were a sponsor of the Asia Pacific Forestry Week that was held in Hanoi in April this year. This is the biggest forestry event in the region which is aimed to work out the agenda and develop strategy in protection of healthy forestry in the region and in Vietnam.

ANZ is an active and consistent sponsor of The Loreto Vietnam-Australia Program (LVAP) which is a non-profit organization headed in Vietnam by Trish Franklin. The Loreto Program supports and assists children who are disadvantaged, poor and disabled, through education training programs.
We also sponsored the business training course for CEOs and senior managers of Vietnamese enterprise, held in conjunction with Sai Gon Doanh Nhan Magazine earlier this year.

Besides, ANZ Vietnam is also acting like a bridge to bring a closer relationship between Australia and Vietnam by participating and sponsoring various events of Australian Embassy and Auscham (Australian Chamber of Commerce) that are beneficial to both countries in the long run.

At ANZ, we also encourage the involvement of our staff in community and charity work by providing them time off work to get involved in a range of activities. For many years we have organised trips to the disabled and orphanage children villages to provide books, toys and clothes at Tet and on Childrens Day.
