The construction on the Phu Quoc international airport with a total investment of VND2,000 billion will be kicked off late this month in southern Kien Giang province, according to a local official.
As designed, the Phu Quoc airport will cover 800 hectares of land in Duong To commune of the island Phu Quoc district, said Truong Van Nghia, chief of the district People's Committee Secretariat.
Once operational in 2010, the airport is expected to meet the demands of around 2.5 million passengers a year.
Vietnam will need VND221.5 trillion (US$13.4 billion) for its plan to develop a network of 26 airports from now to 2020, including Noi Bai in Hanoi City, Cat Bi in Hai Phong City, Phu Bai in Thua Thien Hue province, Tan Son Nhat in HCM City, Chu Lai in Quang Nam province, Cam Ranh in Khanh Hoa province, Long Thanh in Dong Nai province, Can Tho and Phu Quoc.
