Endowed with a long coast of more than 125 kilometres, the massive privileged economic zone spreading over the area of 40,000 square kilometres with many fishing regions rich in seafood source has helped Quang Nam develop aquaculture.

Quang Nam owns an extensive coast and a volume of more than 90,000 tonnes of seafood, which permits annual fishing of 45,000 tonnes. In addition, there are many large rivers and water reservoirs. The irrigation system, particularly Phu Ninh canal network, is allocated along rice fields to avoid floods and create favourable conditions for aquaculture, especially fresh water aquatic cultivation. In 2008, there are 5,056 hectares of fresh water aquatic product breeding in the entire province, including 1,400 hectares of fish pond and 3,656 hectares of fish reservoir. There are various types of fish being raised like yellowtail catfish, all-male tilapia, traditional species of fish, specialty aquatic animals (trionychid turrtle, frog, eel, etc.). To date, fresh water fish breeding is growing well with total rearing area of 5,060 hectares, or 98.25 per cent of annual planned target. At present, some pieces of breeding area are harvested to supply for export and domestic consumption. The harvested output of fresh water fish in the first six months is estimated to reach 3,150 tonnes, equivalent to 26.25 per cent of annual plan, 18 per cent higher than the same period last year. Defining yellowtail catfish and all-male tilapia to be the key material source for export processing, Quang Nam has supported fresh water fish breeding in its localities, approving the project of raising yellowtail catfish for export by 2015, in which the total area for breeding yellowtail catfish is to be 300 hectares with the output of 50,000 tonnes by 2010, and 500 hectares and 100,000 tonnes by 2015.

In order to implement the project of yellowtail catfish breeding, Quang Nam has considered the approval of a supportive mechanism for exported yellowtail catfish rearing to call for investments. The province has invested in infrastructure of the manufacturing zone and verify seafood species in Thang Binh precinct with the capacity of 5 billion of breeding fish a year to supply for breeders inside and outside the province. It also sets up projects of intensive yellowtail catfish breeding in Phu Ninh, Thang Binh and Dien Ban with the scale of 20-30 hectares a project in order to multiply the yellowtail catfish raising for export. Besides, the branch is requesting the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to approve projects of yellowtail catfish breeding for sale in Phu Ninh and Dien Ban.

In the plan of developing the aquaculture of Quang Nam province by 2010 and 2015, the province will establish areas of raising fresh water species for export in Dien Ban, Duy Xuyen, Phu Ninh, and Thang Binh. Thanks to the stimulating mechanism, strong companies and household businesses, powerful corporations, international and local economic organisations are able to invest and produce in the direction of concentrated industrial breeding, which is environmental-friendly, creating a big and clean material source for export processing. In the coming time, the province will mobilise the most sources and attract the maximum external resources into developing the provincial aquatic industry.
