Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet has urged the northern province of Thai Nguyen to call for more investments to expand its steel industry, aiming to turn the province into a metallurgy hub of Vietnam in the future.

The president made the request during his two-day visit to Thai Nguyen ended Mar. 3, the government said on its website.

Thai Nguyen was also required to pay due attention to rural development to improve people’s living standards.

The province is home to a number of steel establishments such as Thai Nguyen Cast Iron and Steel Joint Stock Company (Tisco), one of large-scale steel producers in northern Vietnam and Thai Trung rolled steel plant.

Thai Nguyen obtained a GDP growth rate of 9.1% in 2009. (chinhphu.vn)
