The state-run Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) has received an approval from Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to kick-start 1,200-MW Thai Binh 2 and 1,200-MW Long Phu 1 coal-fired power projects in December.
The US$1.56-billion Thai Binh 2 plant will be built in My Loc commune, Thai Thuy district of the northern province of Thai Binh.
The plant is estimated to consume 4.151 million tons of coal and 10,800 tons of fuel oil per year to generate 7.2 billion kWh of electricity when fully operational in 2015.
Meanwhile, the US$1.4 billion Long Phu 1 plant will be constructed in Long Duc commune, Long Phu district of the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang with expected operation in 2014. (Investment)
