In early March, the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam held the signing ceremony of the grassroots grant contract funded by the Government of Japan for The Project for Reconstructing the Medical Centres of Giap Dat and Tan Pheo Communes, with the grant amount of US$72,753 for each project.

Giap Dat and Tan Pheo are agricultural communes with main products of rice, corn, potato, and cassava. Over 95 percent of the population is ethnic minority. Giap Dat commune has a population of 2,000 with 430 households and a 30 percent household poverty rate, while the population of Tan Pheo is 3,700 with household poverty at 35 percent.

The medical centres of the two communes were constructed in 1990 and now they have become seriously degraded.

Under this circumstance, the people’s committee of Da Bac District has planned to construct new buildings in order to improve the medical services. The Government of Japan has decided to grant an aid to purchase necessary materials for the project.
