Flax Weaving on Ha Giang Rock Plateau

Flax is a common material of the Hmong people in Ha Giang province where the Hmong people are famous for their traditional brocade weaving. All Hmong families have looms and their woven items like towels, cloths, hats, and scarves are mainly for family use. Hmong women typical of diligence have created subtle patterns made from flax.

 

Nung Tam village in Quan Ba district - the ​​gateway to Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark - creates beautifully woven and embroidered items for tourists.

 

Products made from flax are processed for consumer products such as clothing: a shirt, towel, pillow, carpet. The first stage is to take flax peels and dry them before soaking them in dye, cutting, sewing, embroidering and decorating.

 

The Mong people are very keen on products made from flax fabrics because they are warm in winter, cool in summer and very durable. All processes are now manual, from taking flax peels to dyeing. The colour of flax fabrics raises curiosity of tourists because they do not know what makes the diversity of colour.

 

Flax weaving in Nung Tam village, Quan Ba district is very attractive to domestic and international tourists because of the Hmong products. The traditional flax weaving has been transmitted from generation to generation. Currently, Quan Ba ​​district is developing a model to preserve the unique product. Flax weaving is now a breadwinner for many people in Quan Ba district. To date, Nung Tam brocades are exported to 20 countries.
