Can Tho City: For International Integration

 

Can Tho city is the centre of economy, finance, trade, service, culture, science and technology of the Mekong Delta. With good infrastructure and proactive efforts, the city has developed its economy and been given a face-lift.    

 

Good infrastructure

The city has a river-port suitable for 10,000-tonne ships, while Cai Cui seaport is under construction for ships of 30,000 tonnes with cargo capacity of 4.2 million tonnes a year importing equipment, materials and consumer goods, and exporting agricultural produce of the Mekong Delta.  Tra Noc airport is being upgraded to connect domestic and international flights. The existing Tra Noc thermal power station of 200MW is being reinforced by O Mon station with initial capacity of 600MW and 2,600MW in the future. By 2010, the city will have additional water supply stations with a capacity of 200,000 cubic metres a day. Can Tho bridge will be completed by 2008 linking the city with the rest of the country. The city has also a modern telecommunication system connecting with all parts of Vietnam and the world.

 

Developing trade

The city has developed its trade sector, expanding markets in over 70 countries and territories. In 2004, the export value was USUS$320 million and import value USUS$230 million (with Malaysia respectively USUS$20 million and USUS$ 5 million). In 2005, the export value is expected at USUS$370 million, up 15 per cent a year, with 95 per cent in direct export. The city exports mainly to Asia (Japan, China, Taiwan)  over 68 per cent of the volume with such items as processed aquatic products, rice, garment, footwear, handicraft products, agricultural produce. The city imports equipment, materials, fertiliser, chemicals, etc.

 

Attracting investment

The city has 35 foreign investment projects from 16 countries with registered capital of USUS$159 million focusing in aquatic product processing, garment, steel, building materials, cooking oil, refreshments. Some 100 branches and offices of foreign companies operate in the city. Can Tho has two industrial zones: Tra Noc (300 hectares) and Hung Phu (576 hectares). By 2010, there will be more IZs with an area of 2,000 hectares. To attract investment, the city provides preferential treatment in exemption and reduction of land rental, simplified investment formalities, reduction of training and advertisement costs, bonus for investment broker.

 

Can Tho IZs in Brief

 

Tra Noc IZ : Area of 300 hectares, close to Highway 91 leading to An Giang, Kien Giang and the Hau river to Cambodia and the East Sea,  one kilometre from Tra Noc airport, two kilometres from Can Tho port and 10 kilometres from Can Tho city centre. Tra Noc IZ is completed with services in banking, telecommunication, restaurant and hotel. The city can provide experienced technicians and skilled workers. Tra Noc IZ consists of Tra Noc 1 and Tra Noc 2.

Hung Phu IZ : Area of 576 hectares, by the Hau river, 9 kilometres from Can Tho city centre. Hung Phu IZ also consists of Hung Phu 1 and Hung Phu 2 and attracting investment in mechanics, electrical and electronic assembly, agricultural processing, frozen aquatic products, building materials, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and others.

 

By 2010, Can Tho city will expand industrial zones along the Hau River from Hung Phu to Thot Lot and developing industrial zones in Vinh Thanh , Co Do, urban zone with a total area of 2,000-3,000 hectares.
