Kien Giang Agriculture: Efficient Farms

After four years implementing Resolution 3/NQ-CP of the government on developing agricultural farm economy, Kien Giang has over 7,510 farms with efficiency 1.5 times higher than household economy, a total production value of over VND547 billion and an important supply of materials to processing industry inside and outside the province.
 
High economic efficiency
 
By early 2005, the farms in Tien Giang accounted for 10 per cent of the total number in Vietnam with an average of five hectares per farm, including 5,180 farms under cultivation, 2,200 in aquaculture, and the rest performing animal husbandry and other business activities. In Long Xuyen rectangular region alone, the number of farms makes up 31 per cent that of the province and with 50 per cent in aquaculture. Farm owners have invested over VND600 billion in the production, building roads, bridges, canals, power supply. A farm owned by Mr Do Qui Hao in Hon Dat district has been selected as the experimental site for the students of An Giang University. Mr Quy himself has invested over VND50 million in a mini laboratory with Internet computer and hundreds of books on agriculture and business. The products of his farm such as sweet potato, water melon and rice have been presented on a website.
 
At a recent meeting with Kien Giang authorities, the farmers pledged to increase their investments to expand the production, especially in shrimp raising, to make good use of the encouragement policies of the government such as preferential treatment by Resolution 3/NQ-CP of 2000 of the government, Decision 432/2000-ND-NHNN of Vietnam State Bank on credits regarding farm economy. Accordingly, the farms can receive credits of VND20-50 million, a 30 per cent reduction in interest rates for disadvantaged areas and without collateral for aquatic farms. In addition, the province has simplified formalities to facilitate the development of the farm economy.
