Dong Nai Province's Infrastructure Recording Encouraging Achievements

In the 2001-2005 period, investment into infrastructure construction has developed in almost all districts, provincial towns and city of Dong Nai. Such social welfare facilities have made contributions to improving local residents' living standard and driving the province's modernisation and industrialisation process.

Currently, the whole province has 3,302 roads with total length of up to 6,156km. Almost all highways and inter-district roads were tarred; many inter-commune roads and even inter-hamlet roads were concretised. One of localities gaining the fastest traffic growth rate is the city of Bien Hoa. In the past five years, Bien Hoa has ungraded and rebuilt 20 urban roads with total length of 46,194km, improved and rebuilt 8 bridges with overhead expenditure of about VND628 billion (US$39 million). The next is Long Khanh provincial town, Nhon Trach, Long Thanh , Trang Bom districts

In the past five years, Dong Nai's electricity industry has replaced obsolescent, small capacity which quickly increases the number of households who can access electricity. In the whole province of Dong Nai, so far 96 per cent of households can use electricity. Electricity output now reaches 2,860 million of KWh, up from only 1,400 million KWh in 2001 (annual average increase of 119.54 per cent).

In recent years, Dong Nai's responsible agencies have focused on building water supply and sewerage systems. In Bien Hoa, the water supply and sewerage industry invested VND47.426 billion (US$2.9 million) in building water supply systems in 7 suburban wards. And in Long Khanh provincial town, Gia Ray town (Xuan Loc district), the centre of Nhon Trach district and Vinh An town (Vinh Cuu district), water supply and sewerage systems have been completed with overhead expenses of up to VND51.203 billion (US$3.2 million).

Post and telecommunication in the past years has seen a great breakthrough in number of people using telephone services. There are 14.5 fixed telephones per 100 people on average, fulfilling 129.5 per cent of target and exceeding 29.5 per cent of the five-year plan. In addition to demand for telephone, other services such as Express Mail Service (EMS), VoIP 177, 178, 189 and Internet have been more and more developed with improved quality in response to customers' requirements, etc.

In general, the 2001-2005 infrastructure development in Dong Nai obtained encouraging achievements, especially road traffic, however, has not fulfilled the set target. The major shortcomings are insufficient capital from district's budget and aborted socialisation movement, slow land clearance and compensation, inadequate execution supervision, exerting bad impacts on many works' quality.
