After success in hosting the APEC ministerial meeting on bird flu, Da Nang continued to prepare for the third Senior Official Meeting (SOM III) within the framework of the 2006 APEC Vietnam year. Vietnam Business Forum interviewed Luong Minh Sam, director of the Da Nang Department of International Affairs, about the event.

Can you give us some information of the scale, time and programme of SOM III in Da Nang?
Da Nang and Hoi An town will host SOM III within the 2006 APEC Vietnam year from September 4-17, 2006. This is a meeting of deputy ministers and heads of departments from 21 APEC member economies. SOM III focuses on discussing co-operation in APEC and preparations for the ministerial meeting and the summit in November.

How has Da Nang city prepared for the event?
For Da Nang, the event is of great economic and political meaning. Therefore, the preparation for the event was made early and carefully. The city built infrastructure facilities, upgrading urban areas and streets. In particular, the city has completed the building of the Conference Hall at the Furama Resort with an investment capital of US$3 million. This is the biggest and most modern Conference Hall in the Vietnamese hotel system.

The city has concentrated on upgrading Internet connection and mobile phone network, meeting the demand of the meeting. At the same time, security for guests to the meeting has been promoted. Apart from dissemination on the media, posters have been displayed in many places in Da Nang to help local people understand more about the event and to attract them to contribute to the success of the meeting.

What meaning does SOM III have for Da Nang?
This is an opportunity for Da Nang to promote bilateral co-operation, thus boosting its economic development, trade and investment ties with the APEC economies in accordance with APEC’s co-operation priorities, such as the promotion of prosperity and development.

Via the event, Da Nang will promote and introduce its image and potential to the world public, thus promoting its socio-economic development, especially in hotel, tourism, exhibition and fair activities. This is a rehearsal of the city for future hosting of international conferences and meetings. The event is also an opportunity for local people and enterprises to understand more about international economic integration and globalisation when Vietnam is joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
