Vietnam produced 9.74 million metric tons of crude oil in the first eight months this year, down 6.3 per cent on year, said the General Statistics Office (GSO).

In August, the country’s crude oil production reached US$1.17 million metric tons, down 8 per cent on year, the office said.

The fall in crude oil volume is mainly due to lower production at Bach Ho, the country's biggest oilfield, a source from the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade said.

In the January-August, Vietnam produced 5.08 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 165,700 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), up 5.1 per cent on year and down 19.2 per cent, respectively, the GSO said.

GSO said that Vietnam is the third largest crude oil producer in Asia, exporting 8.98 million metric tons of crude oil valued at US$7.88 billion in Jan-Aug this year, up 53.3 per cent on year in value but down 10.8 per cent on year in volume. (GSO Aug 2008)
