Bac Lieu wind power plant is expected to generate commercial electricity in a near term after more than one year of construction.

The first wind power facility in Mekong Delta, located on an campus of 500 ha in Vinh Trach Dong commune, Bac Lieu city, is installed dozens of wind turbines facing the sea. The 99.2 MW plant is capable of producing 310 million kWh a year.

The project was kicked off in September 2010 and was scheduled for power production in a couple of months. The government of Bac Lieu province is asking for permit to expand the facility to become the Mekong Delta wind power centre. If approved, the investor will invest some US$1 billion to install 300 turbines along the coast from Vinh Trach Dong commune, Bac Lieu city to Vinh Thinh commune, Hoa Binh district.

Endowed with a 56 km coastline, Bac Lieu is known the best place in Vietnam to develop wind power. The wind-to-power plant is expected to generate growth engine for the local economy and bring Bac Lieu out of the list of poor provinces.
