10:52:25 AM | 7/3/2006

An Giang province is well known for its mysterious That Son mountains, magnificent Cam mount, resistant Tuc Dup hill in the resistance war against the American, famous Sam mount with the Xu Goddess temple, Thoai Ngoc Hau tomb and Tay An Co Tu. An Giang is also known as the “half-year barren and half-year flooded" land. Following the lunar July festiva’, all fields and villages in An Giang experience the local flood season. Visitors to An Giang in this season will have the chance to admire beautiful landscapes and at the same time participating in local activities which are deeply imbued with characteristics of old-time Southern Vietnamese farmers.

The tourist ship making the 20-minute crossing of the Hau river will take you to Old Ho Isle (My An village, My Hoa Hung commune, Long Xuyen city) - the home village of President Ton Duc Thang. Here, tourists will visit the Commemorative House in honor of President Ton Duc Thang which is a harmonious combination of modern architecture and ancient-pagoda styles. The Commemorative House is situated in a large precinct with lines of trees, canals, a floating pavilion, and paths embellished with Southern Vietnam's distinctive pot plants and flowers. In the Commemorative House, we can see the showroom about Uncle Ton's life and career as well as a temple in his honor. Visitors should not miss the chance of visiting the house on stilts where Uncle Ton lived in his childhood. The house was built by his father in 1887 in the shape of the Chinese letter of "Nation" over more than 150 square meters. In 1932, the house was repaired by Uncle Ton’s younger brother, Mr. Ton Duc Nhung, with the original architecture intact.

Apart from the extended waterway linking the Commemorative House to Tra On ferry landing and O Moi wharf, the House can be accessed by a ten-kilometer road that runs across My Hoa Hung commune. From here, visitors take sampans through canals and submerged fields, and watching pretty country girls in ba ba[i]blouses, a typical blouse worn by Southern Vietnamese women, looming behind palm-leaf conical hats. Also, visitors may watch or join with local farmers in fishing with various tactics. These are pleasures that you can never experience in city life. Visitors will enjoy the dinner with specialties in the flooding season such as sourly-cooked catfish, grilled fish and tiny shrimp which are simply processed but very attractive. Enjoy eating dien dien flower petals, from a type of local flower, whether they are dipped in linh fish mixed soup, fried with tiny shrimps or salted as pickle. Visitors can ride bicycles to get around winding country lanes. Lit houses on the either side loom behind luxuriant orchards. As night falls down, you can hear the sweet lullaby of country girls or a warm singing voice of a peasant mingled with a sad guitar. These beautiful melodies will lull you to a sound sleep in a plank walled house or a country cottage.blouses, a typical blouse worn by Southern Vietnamese women, looming behind palm-leaf conical hats. In the morning, on a boat downstream Hau river, visitors can see the various activities of local people. Lying along the riverside are lift nets rising above the water surface. If nets have just been drawn up; inside, shrimps and fish jump up and down with their fin sparkling silver in the sunshine. A long river stretch is crowded with numerous boats and canoes. These are floating markets – a typical practice of several localities in the Mekong River delta. The scene here is really boisterous and exciting.

Bidding farewell to rustic vegetables and fruit, shuttle-restaurant canoes and smiling country girls to come back to the noisy Long Xuyen city, visitors will remain attached to the pastoral landscape that they have experienced. Peaceful scenery and original daily life are becoming more and more attractive to tourists. Therefore, this newly introduced tour since 2005 has attracted to a large number of foreigners from the United States, Australia and European countries.
